Photography: The Definitive Visual History

October 30, 2020

If you are interested in photographic history, but are the kind of person who prefers large photos with informational captions, sidebars, and plenty of white space check out Photography: The Definitive Visual History by Tom Ang.

This book gives outlines photographic history in thematic chunks such as first photographers, photographing children, women pioneers, world at war, protest photography, documentary as art, and much more.   It’s easy to sit down and read a section, then put the book down and come back to it later.

The last 75 pages features an A to Z Index of short photographer biographies.  These bios are great for skimming to find new photographers to learn about, and also make for an easy reference when you come across a name elsewhere. The list price of this book is $50, though Amazon currently has it for $32.
