“A photobook is an autonomous art form, comparable with a piece of sculpture, a play or a film. The photographs lose their own photographic character as things ‘in themselves’ and become parts, translated into printing ink, of a dramatic event called a book.” – Dutch photography critic Ralph Prins.
In this six week, guided workshop, we are going to explore how to dive more deeply into photobooks and use them as inspiration for our own work. Through lectures and discussions, exercises and assignments, this class will be an inspiring combination of a book club and a creative photography course. Each student will bring 1-3 favorite photobooks to class, and use different perspectives and techniques learned in class to inspire new work of their own.
