Matt Stuart: All That Life Can Afford

October 31, 2020

I chose Matt Stuart’s book, All That Life Can Afford, as my next book to highlight.  First of all, Matt’s street work has been an inspiration for finding the extraordinary in the ordinary in my own work.  He has a quirky sense of seeing and capturing street life that is often fun, and perfectly timed.

Second, it has a red cover.  Currently my photography bookcase is organized by color.  I love how it looks, though my super bookish friends think I am crazy for organizing this way instead of by author or category. Yes, it’s a little harder to find things sometimes, but I love looking at the bookcase, so I am sticking with it for now.  The first color is red, hence Matt’s book.

Finally, although the edition I have of Matt’s book is out of print and hard to find, he is currently selling a re-edited version through Sentana books with a few added images, some removed, and a reordered layout.  I suggest picking up a copy while it’s still available.

You can also purchase a signed special edition which comes with a print (and has a red cover, if you too are organizing by color!).

P.S. If you want to find out about even more photobooks, Matt Stuart has been posting some of his collection on his Instagram feed.
